Our Story

My interest in alternative style began at university.

What drew me to gothic, punk and rock aesthetics was never simply the colour black or the desire to look different. It was the freedom behind them—the idea that personal style does not need to fit neatly into a label.

Alternative style gave me another way to express individuality without asking for permission or accepting someone else’s definition of who I should be.

Jewellery became one of the easiest ways to carry that feeling into everyday life. A pendant, chain or ring could change the character of a simple outfit without requiring an entirely different wardrobe.

But when I started looking for alternative jewellery, I often encountered the same problem: the designs looked striking, yet it was difficult to understand what they represented, why a particular symbol had been chosen or how the piece could become personally meaningful.

That experience became the starting point for Thornberry.

Why Thornberry?

The name Thornberry comes from the contrast between a thorn and a berry.

The thorn represents strength, independence and the boundaries we choose for ourselves. The berry represents something softer, more emotional and deeply human.

Together, they reflect a belief at the heart of Thornberry:

We do not have to be only one thing.

We can be strong and sensitive. Rebellious and romantic. Dark and full of life. Our style can change with us without ever needing to fit someone else’s definition.

What We Choose

We do not choose a piece simply because it looks gothic or alternative.

Every piece considered for Thornberry is evaluated according to four principles:

Distinctive Character

It should bring something memorable to an outfit and offer a clear form of self-expression.

Everyday Wearability

It should feel possible to wear beyond a party, festival or special occasion.

Personal Meaning

Its symbols and inspiration should offer something worth discovering, while leaving room for the wearer to give it a meaning of their own.

Clear Information

Its materials, measurements, fit, care and delivery expectations should be explained as honestly and clearly as possible.

Meaning Beyond Appearance

A spider can represent patience, creativity and creating your own path.

An eye can represent instinct, awareness and seeing beyond the obvious.

A wing can represent freedom, transformation or the refusal to remain confined.

A guitar can hold memories of the songs, stages and moments that helped shape who we became.

We share the inspiration behind our pieces so that you can understand them more easily—but the most important meaning will always be the one you give them yourself.

Thornberry is not about following a gothic uniform or being placed into another category.

It is for anyone who wants to wear something more personal, more expressive and less ordinary—regardless of gender or how they choose to dress.

A Note from the Founder

I first became interested in gothic, punk and rock style at university. What stayed with me was not one particular look, but the freedom of refusing to be defined by a single style or label.

I created Thornberry to share that feeling through jewellery: distinctive pieces that can bring more personality to what you already wear.

I also wanted to address something I had experienced myself. Alternative jewellery is often visually striking, but its symbols and inspiration are not always explained.

Thornberry aims to make those stories easier to discover, while recognising that the most important meaning is the one each person gives to their own piece.

Thornberry is still growing, and every order, message and piece of feedback helps shape what it becomes.
